Pneumatosis intestinalis: spontaneous clinical and radiological resolution.

چکیده
THE AETIOLOGY of pneumatosis intestinalis in most cases is either unknown or open to discussion. Advice and treatment is often a problem. The following case is reported as an example of the group in which recovery was spontaneous. The condition was first described by Du Vernoi in 1738 and much has been written on the subject since then. The various terms that have been used in the past to describe this condition include, intestinal emphysema, gas cysts of intestine, pseudocystic disease of intestine, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, cystoides intestinorum hominis and peritoneal pneumatosis. The condition may occur in any part of the bowel from the stomach to the rectum and may also occur in the mesentery. The collection of air may be linear or more commonly in the shape of cysts. This latter appearance is the explanation for the use of the word 'cystoides' in naming the condition.

Spontaneous benign pneumoperitoneum complicating scleroderma in the absence of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.
We describe a 64 year old woman with a 3-year history of scleroderma who presented as an emergency with increasing painless abdominal distention. Radiological investigations revealed a pneumoperitoneum in the absence of either visceral perforation or pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. This is only the fourth report of spontaneous benign pneumoperitoneum complicating scleroderma without pneumat...
متن کاملHepatic Portal Venous Gas with Pneumatosis Intestinalis
Hepatic portal venous gas with pneumatosis intestinalis are radiological clues of intestinal ischemia. Prompt evaluation and a high index of clinical suspicion for the diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia are necessary given the high mortality of this condition. We present a case of mesenteric ischemia, radiological clues to diagnosis, and associated mechanisms.
متن کاملAbdominal Tuberculosis in a Child Presenting with Radiological Evidence of Pneumatosis Intestinalis and Portal Venous Gas
Pneumatosis intestinalis, in association with portal venous gas, is a rare finding in children and young adults. In radiological studies, it is characterized by gas-filled cysts within the bowel-wall. It is often a sign of the serious significant underlying illness and is associated with a poor prognosis. A case of pneumatosis intestinalis and portal venous gas associated with abdominal tubercu...
متن کاملPneumatosis Intestinalis of the Small Bowel; Radiological and Intra-operative findings
Pneumatosis Intestinalis is defined as the infiltration of gas into the bowel wall. It is a radiological and intra-operative finding of varying aetiology which varies from benign to life threatening conditions. We describe here a case of a 67 year old woman who presented with diffuse abdominal pain and was found to have Pneumatosis Intestinalis.
متن کاملAcute Abdominal Pain and Radiological Pneumoperitoneum - Always an Indication for Laparotomy?
Pneumoperitoneum in the presence of acute abdominal pain is well recognised as an indication for laparotomy. We present a case of acute abdominal pain in the presence of an incidental pneumoperitoneum secondary to the rupture of pneumatosis intestinalis. We will discuss the importance of clinical context in the diagnosis and management of pneumoperitoneum and pneumatosis intestinalis.
